I found myself getting really annoyed with it, willing it to become scary, to have some weight to it, thinking that the buildup would maybe deliver. What people should really be afraid of in this dilapidated society, remains a mystery throughout this movie. What Still Remains is the first full-length feature film for Josh Mendoza after a couple of short films. Both bring gravitas to What Still Remains. Who could have guessed that! Anna returns to save David, but he refuses to leave the Berserkers, who he says have taught him to become strong. The calmness and kindness that Peter exudes as befits a true spiritual leader convinces her. They date back at least as far as 1936 with Things to Come, an H. Anna is scared to be alone in her house, in a world where anyone you see might be out to get you. And who will remain good in a world with no rules? Her brother is lost trying to save her and her mother is dying of illness and Anna takes it all in stride. An unknown plague or illness has wiped out most of humanity, and the immune are left to fend for themselves. They bond further as Anna helps him.
While gathering water, another stranger follows her back to her shack and introduces himself as Peter. For the rest, it brings nothing new and you get an I-have-seen-this-already feeling. Then, one day, she encounters a stranger who at first scares her, but then Anna begins to trust him. As always, The Doctor wishes you all a clean bill of health. When Peter enters the picture, I was immediately wary. The Berserker who was their prisoner attempts to punish David, upset that he let his sister escape.
Encountering more ragged people, Peter explains they are Berserkers — pagans who worship the plague and act as if they are infected. Little things in how the story was told pulled me out of the film. The other women in the commune seem to consider it a sort of marriage ceremony, further worrying her. Anna escapes when Berserkers attack them. Peter explains that his parents either died or abandoned him, and the religious commune took him in. Anna angers Peter by inviting the men to the commune without consulting him. Unfortunately the film never pulls it all together.
I guessed every single plot point. Although upset at what she believes to be Peter's unnecessary violence, Anna reluctantly surrenders her weapons to the religious commune when they arrive. In a world where the plague has ravaged the population for 25 years and driven everyone to a post apocalyptic existence where does everyone get their salon haircuts or hair dye? Noting the shack's religious iconography, Peter asks if she is a believer. Excited to find she was raised Christian, he invites her to join the commune. I enjoyed the acting and the movie is filmed well.
There are even starkly different environments that these movies take place in. After he agrees to surrender his weapons, Anna invites him in. For example the religious based community is fascinating, and some of the discussions in isolation are really good. But after a while, she stays behind all alone when her mother dies a natural death and her brother falls into the hands of a stranger who whistles like a cowboy. Guns, barricades and a general consensus of a fear-filled remnant of society. Evil Dead, Ginger Snaps, The Rapture , and Ben Dohn Norwood; Bruce Almighty, The Sinner. Anna is engaged in such an activity when a handsome young stranger named Peter arrives near her home.
Anna lies to her mother, assuring her that David will return shortly from a hunting trip. I don't blame Lulu Antariksa as Anna but a script which never gets the details right Things are a tad too neat for me and I have lot of questions about the details. . Whether or not Peter is good or bad remains to be seen. The synopsis informs us that a young woman is living alone in a post-apocalyptic world when she is offered a chance by a strange young man to join his peaceful community… or is it? A perpetually grey sky hangs over a landscape devoid of vegetation, dotted with stumps of dead trees and clouds of ash. Set in a fairly remote location, the scenes play out a little like something from The Walking Dead sans any groaning zombies. There have been a myriad of films about post-apocalyptic society in America and around the world. The Road takes place approximately 10 years after a nuclear conflagration has turned planet Earth into a near-lifeless rock. Tracking down a streaming service to buy, rent, download, or watch the Josh Mendoza-directed movie via subscription can be challenging, so we here at Moviefone want to do the heavy lifting.
If you have strong feelings against religious zealotry, you will certainly enjoy this film, even though it may make you very uncomfortable at the same time. It set up a world that makes you, the viewer, desperate to see from the safety of your couch, but it never takes you there. Actually I wasn't a real fan of Anna's character since to me she seemed to behave according to how the film needed her to behave instead of as a real person. Perhaps it all just felt a little too familiar for me being such an apocalyptic and virus movie hound. Thankfully, the recent release on Netflix of What Still Remains was available. A top streaming movie available on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
